Faust I (1808) en Faust II (1832) van Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) behoren tot de bekendste werken uit de literatuur. Het Faust-verhaal kent zijn oorsprong in de 16e eeuw en oefent al meer dan vier eeuwen een ongekende invloed uit op de beeldende kunst, literatuur, muziek en de populaire cultuur. Ook regisseur Fanny Gilbert-Collet grijpt in Doem en verlossing terug naar het magnum opus. Samen met dramaturgen Tom Swaak en Karlijn Clocheret koos ze voor een nieuwe insteek waarbij niet langer de ongelukkige geleerde centraal staat, maar zijn gedoemde geliefde Margarete (Gretchen). Aan de hand van liederen en aria’s van elf componisten halen ze Gretchen uit de schaduw en zo wordt ze een moderne en herkenbare vrouw.
Doem en verlossing is een muzikaal samenspel waarbij over muzikale- en genre-grenzen heen het Faust-verhaal opnieuw verteld wordt. Onder muzikale leiding van Hein Boterberg brengen de studenten van de International Opera Academy, Gent (IOA) de visie van Fanny Gilbert-Collet tot leven.

The origin of the story of Faust goes back to the 16th century and exercices an unprecedented influence on visual arts, literature, music and popular culture. The Canadian stage director Fanny Gilbert-Collet refers back to the magnum opus for Doem & Verlossing. Together with the dramaturgs Tom Swaak and Karlijn Clocheret, she chose a different approach to the story where the unhappy professor is not the center figure anymore but rather his damned fiancée, Margarete (Gretchen). She handpicked arias and songs out of eleven different composers to bring the shadow of Gretchen back to light and thus making her a modern woman.
Doem en Verlossing is an ensemble play where the musical and gender characteristics of the story are re-defined. With the musical direction of Hein Boterberg the students of the International Opera Academy Gent (IOA) give life to the vision of Fanny Gilbert-Collet.
